Relief From Autumn Allergies
published on September 1, 2021

“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” ― Albert Camus

The Autumnal Equinox on September 23rd marks the first day of fall.

Even though we continue to experience warm weather through most of September, there has already begun to be a hint of fall in the air. Some of you may have even started to notice small seasonal changes, including glimpses of the inevitable allergies that often accompany the onset of autumn.

As we are all well aware, allergies are hypersensitivity to a substance that the body sees as unfamiliar. While allergens are countless, there are some common triggers that can result in persistent and often uncomfortable physical symptoms. In the spring, we have pollen from blooming trees and flower buds, and in the fall, ragweed and mold.

The body’s reaction to allergens can manifest differently from person to person, and the severity of the symptoms can vary, sometimes greatly. Common symptoms are sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy or watery eyes, discomfort in the throat and ears, and inflammation of the skin or hives.

Especially during the change of seasons, it’s important to protect yourself and limit exposure as much as possible to that which causes you discomfort and dis-ease.

There are many conventional treatments that are often prescribed to relieve autumn allergy symptoms. These range from antihistamines and decongestants to nasal sprays and eye drops. While these can provide support for some, there are also non-medicinal approaches that can be taken to help soothe the body and the mind.

The use of essential oils in particular can be especially helpful during this time of year. Natural herbs and essentials oils help us to be more in tune with nature and the earth. There are some essential oils that can be especially helpful for allergy relief this autumn.

  • Lavender is calming and purifying. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help aid with congestion. Add a few drops in your bath or on your pillow at night to help ease allergic symptoms and promote relaxation.
  • Peppermint is often associated with the winter season, but its healing properties make it an essential oil perfect for any season. It helps to treat allergic reactions and, similar to lavender, has anti-inflammatory properties. To help ease discomfort from autumn allergies, you can place drops of this essential oil into a diffuser for use throughout the day or night.
  • Eucalyptus is known to relieve cold and flu symptoms and can particularly help relieve respiratory issues. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a vaporizer or aromatic inhaler; inhaling the aromatic steam will help you to breathe easier.

While essential oils are generally a natural and safe alternative therapy, it’s important to note that they should be used with care. There may be sensitivities with certain oils for some. As with any therapy, it is always important to be aware of your body and to check with your physician if you are already taking other herbs, supplements, or medication or have any medical concerns.

As you make your way through the change of season, remember to be kind to yourself and listen to your body. While you may be experiencing some physical effects of the onset of autumn, try to also be aware of how you are feeling on an emotional level. The change of seasons can be a time of deep reflection – a time to unwind, relax, and recharge. Make the space for this in your life as much as you can.
