The Wondrous Scents of Spring
published on March 1, 2021

Spring has Sprung – and with it a whole lot of sneezing and itchy eyes! It’s the time of year when the finish on your car seems faded under a dense coating of pollen. The wondrous scents of spring may go unnoticed or downright avoided due to the rise in seasonal allergies. But worry not, nature always supplies its gifts in balance and provides an array of natural fragrances that can help:

Peppermint can open nasal passages and reduce headaches, which can affect some allergy sufferers, especially after a sneezing attack.

Diffuse five drops of peppermint essential oil at home to unclog sinuses. This will also help to relax the nasal muscles, enabling the body to clear out mucus and allergens like pollen.

Roman Chamomile works wonders to treat rashes, eczema, and other skin conditions caused by an allergic reaction.

Dilute a few drops in a carrier oil such as coconut oil, jojoba, or olive oil. Apply onto the affected area 3 times a day.

Eucalyptus opens up the lungs and sinuses, thereby improving circulation and reducing symptoms of allergies. It produces a cold sensation in the nose that helps improve airflow.

Diffuse five drops of eucalyptus at home or apply it topically to the chest and temples. To clear the nasal passages and relieve congestion, pour a cup of boiling water into a bowl and add 1-2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Then place a towel over your head and inhale deeply for 5-10 minutes.

Lemon soothes respiratory inflammation and can reduce stiffness. It inhibits the growth of bacteria and boosts the immune system.

Mix lemon oil and water in a spray bottle to disinfect your home. It will remove bacteria and pollutants from your kitchen keeping the air clean.

Basil reduces the inflammatory response of allergens, supports the adrenal glands and helps to detoxify the body of bacteria and viruses.

To support the respiratory system, dilute 2-3 drops of basil oil with equal parts coconut oil and apply topically to the chest, back of neck and temples.

When using essential oils for allergies be sure to dilute with a carrier oil like coconut oil or a cream when applying topically. Keep it away from the eyes and be sure to store the essential oils in a cool place away from direct sunlight.

While aromatherapy and aromatherapy massage may help with some allergy relief, it’s best to seek the advice of your healthcare provider before making any lifestyle or diet changes.
